At our school, we use the NCETM Mastering Number Programme to help children in Reception and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) build a deep and lasting understanding of number and early calculation skills. This programme is designed by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and is used by thousands of primary schools across the country.
The aim is simple: to ensure that every child develops a solid ‘number sense’—an understanding of how numbers work, how they relate to each other, and how they can be used flexibly and confidently in everyday life. Rather than rushing into written methods too soon, the focus is on building a strong mental picture of numbers and patterns.
Each day, children take part in a short, structured maths session focused on core number concepts, such as subitising (instantly recognising quantities), number bonds, place value, and additive reasoning. The children will use visual tools like rekenreks (number racks), ten frames, and counters to explore numbers in a hands-on, engaging way.
These daily sessions are in addition to regular maths lessons and are designed to plug gaps, strengthen fluency, and support all learners—especially those who may find maths more challenging.
By mastering these fundamental skills early on, children become more confident, accurate, and flexible thinkers in maths. This gives them the best possible foundation for success in later years, particularly as they move on to more complex topics like multiplication, division, and problem-solving.
We’re proud to be part of this national programme and see the real benefits it brings to our pupils’ understanding and enjoyment of maths.
