How was the fire put out?
In 1666, there was no firefighting service, so ordinary people had to put the fire out themselves.
People had to collect water from the River Thames and used leather buckets, water squirts and metal hooks.
2 leather buckets from the 17th Century.
A water squirt
A metal fire hook. The best way to stop the fire was to pull down houses with hooks to make gaps or 'fire breaks'.
