Willow Class - Reception A

Dear Parents and Carers,

Hopefully you are liking the new style layout of our class page.

We will be uploading new content to the different areas - please be patient, and as always we welcome any feedback you may have that can help us make the pages the best they can be!

Thank you for your on-going support!

Mrs Smith

Tuesday 14th June - super taking away!

A visit from a bearded dragon! Today Miss Hern brought her bearded dragon Jasper in for us to meet. We learnt lots about him and know what mini beasts he likes to gobble!

Friday 10th June -  Homework Task

As we have launched our new theme "What is a minibeast?" we would like you to go on a hunt in your garden or the park to find real minibeasts in their natural home.  Please look closely at the minibeast and carefully draw or make a model of it.  We look forward to sharing these next week and displaying them on our Enquiry Boards in the class room.  Thank you - have fun!

Thursday 9th June

This week we decided to get messy outside and use the powder paint with the water to paint and mix.

The children use lots of different tools to mix the paint and create a big picture.

Monday 6th June

We did it!

Thank you mummies and daddies for supporting our new morning routine!

Your children were all Responsible Reggies and managed their morning jobs amazingly!

Miss Hern and I are super proud.

See you tomorrow - "In the line at ten to nine!"

Wow homework - thank you Jack, Sienna, Habibah and Danyall for pattern hunting at home!

Thursday 26th May - It's been a busy week!

Pattern (repeating and symmetrical) work, addition sentences and problem solving,  Reggies and Caras, numbers to 100, name writing and a model from home (Rayyan!)   Wow - Team Willow are amazing !

Monday 23rd May - Sienna!

Sienna is a Reflective Ralph

"I saw my 2 was the wrong way around so I changed it!"

I am super proud of you Sienna!

...and the addition continues!

Monday 23rd May - Magic maths!

Lots of addition number sentence and investigation going on in Willow class this week.  Some children realised they could use the + sign more than once in a sentence!  How cool is that?

A maths link for free online resources!

Thank you Jade's dad for recommending this for us.  Have a go!

Mud kitchen - can you help?

Once again, our mud kitchen has run out of compost.  Can you help?

Any donations of compost would be gratefully received.  Thank you!

WC 23rd May - Thematic learning this week!

This week in theme, we are looking at the unique powers each of our Super Learning Heroes has!  We will be looking at their skills and thinking of how we can apply these skills to our learning!

Please support us in this by asking your child each day how they have been responsible, collaborative or reflective!

WC 23rd May

I see...I know...I wonder...

One way of increasing vocabulary and imagination, is to look at and discuss things together.  In Willow, this week I will introduce the children to a picture and ask them to finish the sentences...

I see....    I know.... I wonder...

Have a go with this picture!

Here are my answers!

I see a giraffe.

I know he is hungry.

I wonder what his name is.

Doing this at home and encouraging them to write down their answers would really help their learning.

Why don't you bring their ideas into school or email them to

Last week - amazing addition!

Last week we focused our maths learning on adding.  We used our counting skills to work out how many there were altogether.  Some children were keen to record their learning using number sentences.

We used the + and = sign and the words add / equals / makes / altogether / how many? / count

Have a go at home and bring in your learning to show us!

Reflective Ralph!

This week, the children have been introduced to our new Super Learning Hero - Reflective Ralph.  Ralph helps us learn by encouraging us to spot our successes but also find ways of being even more successful in our learning!  We have already had some children demonstrating this super learning power this week, and will be looking out for more next week.

We are still celebrating when children are responsible like Reggie and collaborative like Cara!  Go Team Willow - be super learning heroes!

Friday 20th May - Independent Learning!

Rayyan was super proud of himself for ordering the numeral cards 0 to 20.  He did this all by himself and is able to make each number using numicon plates.  Fantastic Rayyan!

Friday 20th May - Today's Super Learning Heroes!

Today Jamila and Kevin worked together, in their guided reading, to decode words and make sure they understood the story - two super Collaborative Caras. Jamila said "we worked together with reading" and Kevin said "because we are friends!"

Azhe was responsible again - he offered to hold open the door for all his friends to go into the classroom, proudly saying "I will do that for us Mrs Smith!"  Thank you Azhe!

Friday 20th May - Learning Task for Home.

Next week we are focusing our maths learning around pattern.  In preparation for this, please could you look for patterns in the real world this weekend.  Please email any patterns you spot to our parent email or bring pictures and photos in for our maths working wall.

Happy pattern hunting!

A wow from home - Sienna!

Sienna knows that her plant needs "water and sun" to help it grow!

Thursday 19th May

Thank you to everyone who attended the cinema night!  It was a huge success with most of Willlow attending.  Please can we say a thank you to Rohan's mum and dad, Mr and Mrs Patel, who donated choc ices for this event!

Jade is a Reflective Ralph!

Jade worked independently to find different ways of combining numicon plates to total ten.  This follows our addition work in willow this week.  She said "I want to find 10 different ways" - AND SHE DID!  Jade knows that being a Reflective Ralph means loving a challenge.  She recorded her number sentences independently too!  I am so proud of you Jade!¬

TEAM WILLOW - Use this link to find out more about your senses!

Wednesday 18th May - Wonderful writers!

Jamila and Angel visited my office today to show me the books they had made.  They had chosen different coloured paper and stuck and folded them together.  Jamila had written about "treasure in a box" and Angel's book was about "rain storms because today has been a rainy day!"

Well done girls!

Wednesday 18th May  - Our first WOW slip from home!

Thank you Danyall for encouraging mummy to complete a WOW slip.  We are very proud of you!

Tuesday 17th May 2016

Layla-Grace gets creative - she made this camera and spent time photographing friends outdoors!

Angel followed instructions to make a paper aeroplane and decorate it.  She had fun testing it, to see if it would fly!

Guess who!

Miss Spence spotted 2 Collaborative Caras and 1 Responsible Reggie in our outdoor area - these three were amazing at tidy up time!

Can you guess who they are?

A wow from home - Sienna!

"I went to Disney on Ice and I saw the big crocodile and it snapped and catched Captain Hook.  Even Peter Pan saved his friends!"

What a beautiful dress Sienna!

16th May 2016 Wow Moments from your children!

After a review of our learning journals, we would like to raise the involvement of you as parents and carers.

Thank you to those parents who send photographs to our school email

This email is still in use and we show the children photographs of achievement and share successes.  Today your child is bringing home some wow slips for you to use if your child achieves or succeeds with anything.  Please fill in and return these to school.  We will have more copies to hand should you require them.

Many thanks

The Reception Team  smiley

Wow moment from home - Richard!

Richard made this helicopter car with his daddy.  It had a working motor for the propeller.

"We used technology to power it up.  Then I added decoration to make it cool!"  It certainly got lots of wows from the rest of Willow class!

Wow's from home Isabelle and Jack!

Jack and Isabelle have both brought wow objects from the beach.

"Aunty June went to Filey with Uncle Roy.  She went to the sea and she found this dinosaur bone - it's real and not pretend.  She brought it back and gave it to me."  Jack is a keen palaeontologist - he loves finding out about dinosaurs!

"My mummy went to Ireland and brought me a shell.  It's from the beach.

A wow from home - Jade!

Jade is really looking after her plants at home.  Jade reports that "Scarlett's is starting to grow, mine is the biggest but mummy's isn't growing yet"  Thank you for emailing this pictures to school Jade!

A wow from home- Layla-Grace!

Layla-Grace won these trophies at her dance competition for ballet, modern and song & dance.  What a superstar she is!

Well done Willows! smiley

10th May 2016  Superhero senses.

Today we have been thinking about our senses.  This clip introduces the senses using animals.

We have learnt that there are 5 senses.  Ask your child if they can tell you what they are!

10th May 2016   Maths skills - Counting on.

In maths this week we have further developed our COUNTING ON  skills.  We are using this skill to solve addition sentences.  Here is a WAGOLL (what a good one looks like) to show you how we do this.

6th May 2016

By 9.10am this morning Igor and Jack had demonstrated both 'Responsible Reggie' and 'Collaborative Cara' style behaviour.

Igor was concerned about LAZY LIDS (pens without lids on).  Jack had spotted the lids and they leapt into action to solve the problem together!  Wow.

Thank you Jack and Igor!

6th May 2016

Layla-Grace and Habibah were upset that someone had opened our squeezy paint tubs.   They decided to walk around our setting and look for people who may have done this by checking for painty hands or clothes.

Here is a list of children they made.  Fab writing girls!

They know that lists need words to be written underneath each other!

New phonics groups were launched today - ask your child who they learn phonics with every day!

They will be in a group led by Mrs Smith, Mrs Widdop, Miss Hern or Mrs Karetsou!

Mrs Shaw comes to teach phonics occasionally too!

4th May 2016

I am a very happy teacher!

Willow children are embracing all the writing challenges on offer and are writing with growing independence!

Sienna, Habibah, Layla-Grace, Madison and Muskaan were concerned about a poorly ladybird they found outside.  They made a sign saying ...

                                                "Don't touch the dead ladybird!"

Some children have made detailed treasure maps and written an X to mark the treasure spot!

Darren has written the words "flat ball" using his phonics and Richard heard and wrote the sounds g o l d to show where the golden treasure is!

Well done Team Willow!

Lane End Cinema Event

4th May 2016

Thank you to all Willow parents who are allowing their child to enter the corridor independently.  Please can we ask that ALL parents support us in this now.  The children are ready!

Friday 29th April

The app Hairy Letters can be downloaded - it is a motivating way to help children practise the correct letter formation.  Have a look!

Friday 29th April

We are practising our handwriting every day after lunch.

We look at the capital and lower case letter and learn the name of the letter and the sound.

We then write the letter in the air with our 'magic pencils' (our fingers) and then on paper or a white board.  We are getting better every single day!

Friday 29th April

Mrs Britton is launching a school Job Squad.  The children have been told the jobs that are available and have filled in application forms.

Team Willow are very excited - so far we have completed application forms from

Habibah, Leon, Layla-Grace, Jack, Isabelle, Mahek and Jade!

Interviews are next week - fingers crossed for them all!

Every afternoon we go to our 'Dough Room' where there are activities to develop our gross and fine motor skills.  We always do this with music.

We sometimes use this link to strengthen our hands and figures - this helps us with our writing and mark making!  If you have dough, have a go at home - your child will show you what to do!

Donations please!

Do you have any seeds or beans you could donate for our reception learning next week please?

Attached is a series of pictures taken from our focus story book, The Magic Porridge Pot. A key skill for children in Willow is to be able to use language to recall and then retell familiar stories. Can your child retell the story using these pictures? Have a go!

This week our maths learning has been focused on handling data by asking each other questions.

So far we have collected information asking who likes porridge and who doesn't.  Today we made toast and developed our motor skills by spreading butter.   We kept track of who liked the toast and who didn't and talked about HOW MANY!

The children then collected information from friends independently - some of these are on our maths working wall!  Have a look tomorrow to see what independent learners we are becoming.

how many?

more  less  fewer

This BBC web link gives guidance on reading with your child at home.

There is also some information regarding maths learning.

Can you help?

Our mud kitchen is a HUGE success with our children, but we keep running out of compost!!

Do you have any in your sheds or greenhouses or at the allotment that you would be happy to donate to our little gardeners?  We would be so grateful!

The Magic Porridge Pot! Next week we will be reading the story and focusing our learning around the story 'The Magic Porridge Pot'. Have you read this story before? Do you know who the characters are in the story?

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL WILLOW MUMMIES! Please remind your child to give you their card - we put them in book bags at home time 😀

Look at Team Willow in action!

Some fantastic learning logs - long and short!

This link takes you to an internet page that contains a range of games suitable for young children.

Have fun!

Please help me say a massive thank you to Jade's dad who is helping me with our class page!

We really appreciate your time and feedback! smiley

This week we have had more fun matching speech bubbles to characters by reading the text.  We have used character voices to repeat the words in the speech bubble for Daddy Bear, Mummy Bear, Baby Bear and Goldilocks.

At home this week, please help your child write a speech sentence in the bubble for a character of their choice.  The children know speech sentences need a...

We appreciate all the help you give your child and we have some children trying really hard to write independently.  Please encourage them to do this in thelearning log tasks.

This week in maths we have been learning how to subtract

                                                                              by TAKING AWAY.

We have done this in our play and with friends - we have made sets and taken away some objects to see how many are left!

We have used the words....

take away, subtract, count, how many are left?

We have sung songs about taking away such as ...

5 little speckled frogs

10 Little Men in a Flying Saucer

5 Currant Buns in a Baker's Shop

WORLD BOOK DAY 03.03.16.

Thank you so much for being so supportive and joining us in our World Book Day assembly today!  It was lovely to see so many of you and I'm sure you felt proud of ALL our amazing children as they retold the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Each child will bring home a £1 book voucher they can redeem in book stores for either a £1 book, or use it as part payment towards another book of their choice.  Please click on the link below for more information.

LEARNING LOG WC 21.02.16. Please see the attached document for this week's task. Each child has a picture frame sheet to fill with their favourite character from a traditioanl tale.

This week, we have been exploring the concept of capacity.

We have used the terms...

half full

half empty

nearly full

nearly empty

We are working hard to learn new sounds for reading and spelling.  We ensure the children learn how to say these in a 'pure' way.  This video clip shows you what we mean!

We collect Learning Logs in every Thursday and send them home again on Friday with a new home learning task to share.  Thank you to all those parents who are supporting this and helping their child extend and apply their learning.  We really appreciate it!

Learning Log WC 30th November 2015

WC 30th November 2015  Learning Log

This week we have focused our maths learning around 2D shapes.  We know that shapes are everywhere!  Please can you explore your homes looking for and naming shapes.  Please talk about the shapes you find – how many sides and corners does a shape have?  Is there anything special about the shapes you find?

Have fun!

Learning Log - WC 23rd November 2015

WC 23rd November 2015 Learning Log

Thank you so much for your on-going support with the challenges set in the learning logs. We really do enjoy celebrating these achievements with the children, especially when we can see the effort you and your child has put in!

So far in phonics we have all learnt the sounds…

m a s d t i n p g o c k u

This week, we would like your child to get creative with these sounds and try and make simple words with them. For example – they could take the letter sounds p o and t and draw a pot! Can they write the words too! How many different words can you make together?

Have fun!

Newsletter 26th November 2015

Leaf Challenge - Can you write your name?

We work hard at school to collect leaf tokens for being safe, responsible and respectful learners!

Can you be a responsible learner at home and practise writing your name?

Write your name on a piece of paper and bring it to school for us to share with your friends... make it as colourful and eye catching as you can!  We can't wait to see your writing!

Have fun!  (Thank you parents and carers for supporting your child in this challenge!)

So far we have learnt the sounds

                              m  a  s  d  t  i  n  p  g  o  c  k  u ... and some children already know more!

Everyday we have a phonics lesson, where we...

*learn new sounds (and how to say them properly)

*say the sounds within words

*read simple words with that sound in

*learn how to correctly write the sound

*find objects beginning with that sound

Its fun and fast - and our reading and writing is getting better!

Well done Team Willow!

We are learning to blend sounds together to read words!  Can you say the sounds and read the words below...

cat     dog     peg     pig     pot     dig     tap

This week, we are learning about "Day Monkey and Night Monkey" using the book by Julia Donaldson.

Click on this link to hear and see the story...

We hope you enjoy it!
