Phonics

This week we are going to focus on the following 2 sounds. Please look at ch for 2 days and  th for 2 days, NOT ON THE SAME DAY.

Firstly, if you would like to watch a video all about the sound, log into Espresso ( logon details in your home learning pack) and follow the pathway:

 

Literacy – phonics – scrap’s phonics – click on the letter sound.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Then, if you can, have a go at the blending games on the right hand side of the page that go along with each sound.

 

 

 

 

 

Reading activity to go along with 'ch'.

 

First have a go at reading these ch words.

For a challenge have a go at blending these words

hopscotch

 

USE SOUND BUTTONS TO HELP. PUT A SOUND LINE UNDER ch so your child knows that it makes one sound, just like in ck.

 

 

 

Reading activity for ch.

Today we are going to focus on reading sentences with words containing the ch digraph. Encourage your child to 'hold the sentence' and repeat it each time they read a new word. Then read the sentence without blending at the end. 

 

A man is rich if he has lots of cash. 

 

The van will chug up the big hill.

Writing activity for 'ch'

 

Practice writing the ch sound. How many times can you write it in a minute? Remember there are two letters in the ch sound.

 

 

 

 

Can you write a sentence about the picture? Don't forget your finger spaces and full stops. Listen for all the sounds in words.

 

 

Tricky word game

 

Lots of you really enjoyed the tricky word game last week, so here is another one for you! 

Try to mix it up and use a variety of the tricky words that we have learned in Reception. You might use 

 

I, no , go , to , into, the

 

he, she, me, we, be, me, all , you, are, was, they, my, her,

 

Car park tricky words! 

 

Ask your child to help you to write tricky words in car parking spaces. Go through them with your child. Then ask them to park their car into one of the spaces by saying the tricky word. Keep practising!

Wednesday 20th May 2020 - th

 

'th' is the next sound in our set of digraphs. 'th' is a little tricky as it makes the sound in 'this' and also the sound in 'bath'. We like to call it the 'rude sound'. It's the only time I like children to stick their tongue out at me! Practice saying 'th'. 

 

 

 

As always, watch the introduction to 'th' on scraps phonics. 

 

 

 

Then play the blending games along the side to supplement the sound. 

 

 

Practice reading words containing the 'th' digraph. Don't forget to stick out your tongue! Use sound buttons and sound lines along the long 'th' sound.

Reading activity - children often needs lots of practice with 'th'. I heard that lots of children enjoyed playing silly soup last week. Can you play silly soup with the th words? 

 

 

Add in some different words with different sounds if you feel your child needs specific practice with a certain sound.

Make a little writing frame with 3 block that looks like this! 

 

 

 In a phoneme frame one sound goes in one box, so path would look like this!

Using a phoneme frame can help to remember that two letters make one sound. 

Use a phoneme frame to write the th words that have been provided today. 

 

Writing activity - What is at the bottom of the path? 

 

Can you write a sentence about something you might find at the bottom of the path?
