Phonics
This week we are going to focus on the following 2 sounds. Please look at qu for 2 days and sh for 2 days, NOT ON THE SAME DAY.
qu |
sh |
Firstly, if you would like to watch a video all about the sound, log into Espresso ( logon details in your home learning pack) and follow the pathway:
Literacy – phonics – scrap’s phonics – click on the letter sound.
Then, if you can, have a go at the blending games on the right hand side of the page that go along with each sound.
Reading activity to go along with 'qu.'
First have a go at reading these qu words.
quick
quack
quit
quiz
All these words have 3 sounds in them. We blend them just like we do with our short words like 'cat' or 'dog'
For a challenge have a go at blending this word - liquid.
USE SOUND BUTTONS TO HELP. PUT A SOUND LINE UNDER QU so your child knows that it makes one sound, just like in ck.
Reading activity - silly soup.
You will need a pan and a spoon and some paper.
Write the following words on to paper and fold them up tight.
Put them into the pan. Your child makes some silly soup by singing the song that they are very familiar with.
quiz | zig | red | quick |
mog | sock | quit | kid |
pick | quack | zag | yak |
Writing activity for 'qu'
Practice writing the qu sound. How many times can you write it in a minute? Remember there are two letters in the qu sound.
Can you write me a quiz question? I will answer it and reply back!
You might ask :
Can you hop to 100?
Can you sit on a pin?
Silly questions will be fun!!
Can you write a sentence about the queen?
Wednesday 13th May - sh
'sh' starts our work on digraphs. A digraph is 2 letters that make 1 sound. We use the word digraph with your child and explain that it is " 2 letters that make 1 sound." When writing digraphs we put a sound line under the sound, just like this ship.

Reading game for sh
Practice reading words containing the sh digraph playing a game that we love to play in Reception
Play cross the river.
Use a towel as the river. Make cards with sounds on. Sh will be on one card as it is one sound. Ask your child to jump across the river blending the words. If your child needs a little support with some of the words, push the sounds together, ask them to blend quicker, remember they can 'fred' to help them too.
Can you have a go at reading the following caption?
I am in a rush to get to the shops.
Writing activity for sh
Have a go at independently writing the sh words listed above.
Ask your child to say the word - shop.
How many sounds are in shop? -3. Put up three fingers.
Push the sounds onto your fingers - sh - o - p
Repeat this a couple of times to help your child to remember the order of the sounds.
Write the word
You may need to write at the top of the page as a model to help them to remember that s and h together makes the sh sound.
As always, please dont hesitate to contact me with any questions.
