Counting to 20


This week in maths we are going to be thinking all about counting to 20. The children have practise every day with counting to 20 and beyond. They enjoy watching these videos to help with their understanding of counting to 20 and beyond!

We use the numberblocks in Reception to help us to introduce new numbers and mathematical topics. These videos will help your child to understand counting to 20. 


Once your child is confident counting to 20, have a go at matching amounts to the number. This will help them to recognise the numeral and also the quantity. If you have blocks, you could make numbers to 20 to help your child to see that the numbers increase by one each time.  You could use different objects like buttons to show this and line them up as below. 



Track to 20

Make a large track to 20 outside or inside. Say a number and encourage your child to count to that number on the track. Do it by jumping, hopping, throwing a stone and counting to that number. You could do it on a small scale and roll a dice. Move up the track saying the numbers. The first person that gets to 20 is the winner! 





Matching game


Give your child an amount of objects to count. Then write 3 different numbers. Your child has to count accurately and pick the number that it corresponds to.  Recognising teen numbers is something that takes lots of practice. We talk about how 14 is ten and 4, 16 is 10 and six. When we learned about ten, we talked about how 10 was one ten and the zero holds the one in place. 




Give your child the numbers to 20. Ask them to pick 4. Call numbers to 20 and play bingo! 


Another variation of this is to pick 4 numbers to 20. Then grab and count amounts of something. When they have matched a number that matches one on their bingo board they can cross it off. When they have matched all their amounts- bingo!
