Ancient Greeks and trade
Why Did the Ancient Greeks Trade by Sea?
The Ancient Greeks traded by sea because it was much easier for them than traveling on land. Here’s why:
Too Many Mountains
Greece has lots of mountains, which made traveling on land very tricky. Roads were rough, and it was hard to move big loads across steep paths.Lots of Coastlines and Islands
Greece is surrounded by water, with many coastlines and islands. This made it perfect for using ships to trade because there were so many places to stop and exchange goods.Faster and Cheaper
Traveling by ship was much faster than walking or using carts on land. It also cost less because they didn’t need as many animals or workers to move goods.Ships Could Carry More
Ships could carry much bigger and heavier loads, like jars of olive oil, wine, and pottery. This meant they could trade more at once, which was great for business!
